Chester, New York Description
Chester, NY is a small town located in Orange County, New York. It is situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, about 50 miles north of New York City. The town has a population of approximately 3,000 people and covers an area of 4.2 square miles.
The town was founded in 1712 by settlers from Connecticut and was originally known as "Chesterfield". It was later renamed to Chester in 1845 after the Earl of Chesterfield in England. The town is home to several historic sites including the Chester Academy, which was built in 1790 and is one of the oldest schools in the state.
Chester is a rural community with a strong agricultural heritage. The town is home to several farms that produce fruits and vegetables for local markets as well as for sale at farmers' markets throughout the region. There are also several wineries located nearby that offer tastings and tours.
