Waynesville, North Carolina is a small town located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. It is situated in Haywood County and is the county seat. The town has a population of approximately 10,000 people and is known for its quaint downtown area, which features a variety of unique shops and restaurants.
The town was founded in 1810 by Colonel Robert Love, who named it after General “Mad” Anthony Wayne. It was incorporated in 1871 and has since become a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park offers visitors plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, and horseback riding.
Waynesville is also home to several historic sites including the Shelton House Museum & Farmstead, which showcases artifacts from the 19th century. Other attractions include Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center, Cataloochee Ski Area, and Wheels Through Time Museum. The town also hosts several annual festivals such as Folkmoot USA Festival of World Dance & Music and the Mountain Street Arts Festival.
