Murphy, North Carolina is a small town located in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. It is situated in Cherokee County and is the county seat. The population of Murphy is approximately 1,600 people.
The town was founded in 1839 and named after Archibald D. Murphy, a prominent local politician and businessman. The town has a rich history that includes the Cherokee Indians who lived in the area before European settlers arrived.
Murphy is known for its beautiful mountain scenery and outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, camping, and whitewater rafting. There are several state parks nearby including Nantahala National Forest and Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. The town also has several museums including the Cherokee County Historical Museum and the John C. Campbell Folk School which offers classes on traditional Appalachian crafts such as weaving and pottery making.
