Calabash, North Carolina Description
Calabash, North Carolina is a small town located in Brunswick County, just south of the North Carolina-South Carolina border. It is known as the "Seafood Capital of the World" due to its abundance of fresh seafood restaurants and markets. The town has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is situated on the Intracoastal Waterway.
The town was founded in 1795 by Scottish immigrants who named it after a type of gourd used to make calabash pipes. The town has grown over the years and now features a variety of attractions for visitors to enjoy. These include several golf courses, fishing charters, boat tours, and nature trails. There are also several shops and restaurants that offer local seafood dishes such as shrimp and grits, crab cakes, and oyster stew.
Calabash is home to many festivals throughout the year including the Calabash Seafood Festival which celebrates local seafood with live music, food vendors, and craft booths. Other popular events include the Calabash Music Festival which features bluegrass music from local bands as well as national acts; the Calabash Arts & Crafts Festival which showcases handmade items from local artisans; and the Calabash Christmas Parade which features floats decorated with holiday lights.
The town also offers plenty of outdoor activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, bird watching, beachcombing, and more. With its close proximity to Myrtle Beach and Wilmington NC it makes for an ideal weekend getaway or vacation destination for those looking for a relaxing escape from their everyday lives.
