Bolivia, North Carolina is a small town located in Brunswick County, North Carolina. It is situated on the banks of the Cape Fear River and is part of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Bolivia was estimated to be 1,822 in 2019.
Bolivia is a rural community with a rich history. It was founded in 1725 by settlers from Scotland and named after Simon Bolivar, a Venezuelan military leader who led several South American countries to independence from Spain. The town has remained largely unchanged since its founding and still retains much of its original charm.
The town is home to several historic sites including the Old Brunswick County Courthouse, which dates back to 1750 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Other attractions include the Bolivia Historic District, which features several buildings from the 19th century, as well as the nearby Orton Plantation Gardens and Museum.
Bolivia offers plenty of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy. The nearby Brunswick Nature Park offers hiking trails, fishing spots, and picnic areas for visitors to explore. There are also several golf courses in the area for those looking for a round or two.
The town also hosts several annual events such as the Bolivia Blueberry Festival in June and the Bolivia Christmas Parade in December. These events draw large crowds from all over North Carolina and beyond who come to enjoy local food, music, artisans, and more!
