Butte, Montana Description
Butte, Montana is a city located in the southwestern part of the state. It is the fifth largest city in Montana and is known as the “Richest Hill on Earth” due to its rich mining history. Butte was founded in 1864 as a mining camp and quickly grew into a bustling city with a population of over 30,000 by 1910. The city was home to many immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and other European countries who came to work in the mines.
Butte has a unique culture that blends its mining heritage with modern amenities. The downtown area is full of historic buildings, including the iconic Copper King Mansion which was built by one of Butte’s most famous citizens, William Andrews Clark. The city also has several museums dedicated to its mining history, such as the World Museum of Mining and the Mai Wah Society Chinese Museum.
Butte is also home to Montana Tech, a public university that offers degrees in engineering, science, technology, and business. The university has an active student body and hosts several events throughout the year such as concerts and art shows.
