Independence, Missouri Description

Independence, Missouri is a city located in the western part of the state, just east of Kansas City. It is the fourth largest city in Missouri and has a population of around 116,000 people. The city was founded in 1827 and is known as the “Queen City of the Trails” due to its historical importance as a major stop on the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe Trails.

The city has a rich history that includes being home to President Harry S. Truman from his childhood until he left for college. The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum is located here and is one of the most popular attractions in Independence. Other popular attractions include the National Frontier Trails Museum, which tells the story of America’s westward expansion; Vaile Mansion, an Italianate-style mansion built in 1881; and Bingham-Waggoner Estate, an antebellum mansion built in 1852.

Independence also offers plenty of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy. The city has several parks including Waterfall Park, which features a waterfall and walking trails; Englewood Park, which has a lake with fishing opportunities; and Little Blue Trace Trail, which runs through town along Little Blue River. There are also several golf courses in town for those looking to hit some balls around.

Independence is home to several colleges and universities including William Jewell College, University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), Avila University, Metropolitan Community College-Blue River Campus, and DeVry University-Kansas City Campus. The city also boasts several shopping centers such as Independence Center Mall and Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World at Independence Commons Shopping Center.
