Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city located in the southeastern corner of the state, along the Mississippi River. It is the county seat of Cape Girardeau County and has a population of around 37,000 people. The city is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and outdoor recreation opportunities.
The city was founded in 1793 by French settlers and named after Jean Baptiste Girardot de Belcourt, who was a French explorer and trader. It was an important trading post during the early 19th century and served as a major port for steamboats traveling up and down the Mississippi River.
Today, Cape Girardeau is home to Southeast Missouri State University, which provides educational opportunities to students from all over the world. The university also hosts numerous cultural events throughout the year such as concerts, plays, art exhibits, and festivals.
The city has many parks and recreational areas including Capaha Park which features a lake with fishing piers, walking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and more. There are also several golf courses in town as well as an indoor water park called Splash Zone.
Cape Girardeau is also home to several museums including the Discovery Playhouse Children’s Museum which offers interactive exhibits for children of all ages; The Cape River Heritage Museum which showcases artifacts from local history; The Old Apple Tree House Museum which features historic buildings from around town; and The Red House Interpretive Center which focuses on Native American culture.
The city also has a vibrant nightlife with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. There are also several shopping centers in town offering everything from clothing stores to specialty shops.
