Minnesota is a state in the Upper Midwest region of the United States. It is bordered by Wisconsin to the east, Iowa to the south, North Dakota and South Dakota to the west, and Lake Superior and Canada to the north. Minnesota is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" due to its many lakes and rivers. The state's capital is Saint Paul, while its largest city is Minneapolis.
Minnesota has a humid continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The average temperature in January is around 14°F (-10°C), while in July it is around 73°F (23°C). The state receives an average of 28 inches (71 cm) of precipitation per year, with snowfall occurring from November through April.
Minnesota's economy is largely based on agriculture, manufacturing, and services. Major industries include food processing, medical technology, printing and publishing, transportation equipment, and tourism. The state also has a large mining industry that produces iron ore, taconite pellets, copper, nickel, cobalt, lead, zinc, gold, silver, and other minerals.
Minnesota is home to a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, black bears, wolves, coyotes, beavers, muskrats, foxes, bald eagles, loons and many other species of birds. There are also numerous species of fish in Minnesota's lakes and rivers including walleye pike and lake trout.
The state has a rich cultural heritage with many museums and historical sites such as Fort Snelling State Park in St. Paul which was built in 1820 as a military outpost for the US Army; Split Rock Lighthouse on Lake Superior which was built in 1910; Grand Portage National Monument which preserves an important fur trading post; Pipestone National Monument which preserves an ancient quarry used by Native Americans for centuries; and Voyageurs National Park which protects over 218 miles (351 km) of shoreline along four major lakes.
