Muskegon, Michigan Description
Muskegon, Michigan is a city located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Muskegon County and is located just south of Grand Rapids. The city has a population of 38,401 as of the 2010 census and is part of the larger Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland Combined Statistical Area with a population of 1,321,557.
The city was founded in 1837 by French-Canadian fur traders and was originally known as Muskego or Muskigum. It was later renamed Muskegon after the river that runs through it. The city has a rich history and was once home to many lumber mills that helped fuel its growth in the 19th century. Today, it is home to several industries including manufacturing, healthcare, education, tourism, and retail.
The city has several parks and recreational areas including Pere Marquette Park which features a beach on Lake Michigan as well as picnic areas and trails for hiking and biking. There are also several museums such as the USS Silversides Submarine Museum which houses one of only two surviving World War II submarines in the United States. Other attractions include Heritage Landing which hosts festivals throughout the year such as Summer Celebration and Winterfest; Hackley Park which features an outdoor amphitheater; and Muskegon State Park which offers camping, fishing, swimming, boating, hiking trails, and more.
Muskegon also offers plenty of shopping opportunities with stores ranging from small boutiques to large department stores like Meijer and Target. There are also several restaurants offering everything from fast food to fine dining experiences. The downtown area features many historic buildings that have been restored to their original beauty while still offering modern amenities like restaurants and shops.
