Mattawan, Michigan Description
Mattawan, MI is a small village located in the southwestern corner of Michigan. It is situated in Van Buren County, just south of Kalamazoo and east of Paw Paw. The village has a population of approximately 4,500 people and covers an area of 3.2 square miles.
The village was founded in 1837 by settlers from New York and Ohio who were attracted to the area by its rich soil and abundant natural resources. The name Mattawan comes from the Potawatomi language, meaning “meeting place” or “gathering place”.
The village is home to several parks and recreational areas, including the Mattawan Village Park, which features a playground, picnic area, basketball court, and walking trails. Other attractions include the Mattawan Historical Museum, which houses artifacts from the early days of settlement in the area; the Mattawan Nature Preserve; and several golf courses.
The village also has a vibrant downtown area with many shops and restaurants. There are also several churches in town that serve as gathering places for residents to worship together.
Mattawan is served by two school districts: Mattawan Consolidated Schools and Lawton Community Schools. Both districts offer excellent educational opportunities for students of all ages. In addition to public schools, there are also several private schools in town that provide quality education for students who prefer a more personalized learning experience.
