Berrien Springs, Michigan Description
Berrien Springs, Michigan is a small village located in the southwestern corner of the state. It is situated on the banks of the St. Joseph River and is part of Berrien County. The village has a population of around 1,500 people and is home to Andrews University, a Seventh-day Adventist college.
The village was founded in 1831 by settlers from New York and Pennsylvania who were looking for a place to practice their religious beliefs without persecution. The area was originally known as "Springsville" due to its many natural springs that provided fresh water for the settlers. In 1844, the name was changed to Berrien Springs after John M. Berrien, an attorney from Georgia who had served as Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson.
Berrien Springs is known for its quaint downtown area which features several historic buildings including the old post office and courthouse. There are also several churches in town including St. Paul's Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, and Seventh-day Adventist Church. The village also has a public library and several parks including Mill Pond Park which offers fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities.
The village is home to several annual events such as the Berrien County Fair which takes place each summer at Mill Pond Park and features carnival rides, food vendors, live music, and more. Other popular events include the Berrien Springs Art Fair which showcases local artists' work each spring; the Berrien Springs Harvest Festival which celebrates local farmers; and the Berrien Springs Christmas Parade which takes place each December with floats, marching bands, Santa Claus, and more!
