Wicomico, Maryland Description
Wicomico is a county located in the Eastern Shore region of Maryland, USA. It is bordered by Somerset County to the north, Worcester County to the east, and Dorchester County to the south. The county seat is Salisbury, which is also the largest city in Wicomico.
The county has a total area of 437 square miles and a population of 98,814 as of 2019. The climate in Wicomico is humid subtropical with hot summers and mild winters.
The economy of Wicomico is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The county produces corn, soybeans, wheat, tomatoes, melons, apples, peaches, and other fruits and vegetables. It also has several poultry farms that produce eggs and chicken meat for sale throughout the region. Tourism is also an important part of the economy with many visitors coming to enjoy the beaches along Chesapeake Bay or explore the historic sites in Salisbury such as Poplar Hill Mansion or Pemberton Hall.
Wicomico County has several educational institutions including Salisbury University, Wor-Wic Community College, University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), and Wor-Wic Technical High School. There are also several private schools in the area such as Sts Peter & Paul Catholic School and Salisbury Christian School.
The county offers plenty of recreational activities for residents and visitors alike including hiking trails at Adkins Arboretum or Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge; fishing spots along Chesapeake Bay; golf courses; parks; museums; art galleries; theaters; shopping centers; restaurants; wineries; breweries; distilleries; and more.
