Salisbury, Maryland Description

Salisbury, Maryland is a city located in the eastern part of the state, on the Delmarva Peninsula. It is the county seat of Wicomico County and home to Salisbury University. The city has a population of 30,343 as of 2019 and is the largest city in the region.

The city was founded in 1732 and named after Salisbury, England. It was an important port for shipping tobacco and other goods from the Eastern Shore to Baltimore and Philadelphia. In 1812, it became an incorporated town and later a city in 1854.

Salisbury is known for its historic downtown area which includes many buildings from the 19th century such as City Hall, St. Peter's Episcopal Church, and the Wicomico County Courthouse. There are also several museums including the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, Salisbury Zoo, and Poplar Hill Mansion. The downtown area also features many shops, restaurants, galleries, and entertainment venues.

The city is home to several parks including Winter Place Park which features a lake with paddle boats available for rent during summer months; Pemberton Historical Park which offers walking trails; Schumaker Pond Park which has a playground; and Schumaker Pond Nature Center which offers educational programs about local wildlife.

Salisbury also hosts several annual events such as National Folk Festival in September; Third Friday Street Festival in May; Fourth Friday Street Festival in June; Downtown Salisbury Festival in August; Christmas Parade in December; and Salisbury Festival of Lights during December holidays.
