Cumberland, Maryland Description

Cumberland, Maryland is a small city located in the western part of the state, near the border with West Virginia. It is situated in Allegany County and is the second largest city in the county. The city has a population of around 20,000 people and is known for its historic downtown area, which features many 19th century buildings.

The city was founded in 1787 by English settlers who named it after Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. It quickly grew to become an important transportation hub due to its location at the junction of several major roads and waterways. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal also ran through Cumberland, connecting it to Washington D.C., Baltimore, and other cities along the East Coast.

Today, Cumberland is home to a variety of attractions including museums, parks, theaters, and restaurants. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad offers scenic train rides through the countryside while visitors can also explore nearby Rocky Gap State Park or take a stroll along Canal Place Heritage Area. The city also hosts several annual festivals such as the Great Allegheny Passage Bike Festival and the Allegany Arts Council’s Summerfest celebration.
