Cambridge, Maryland Description

Cambridge, Maryland is a small city located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. It is situated on the banks of the Choptank River and is part of Dorchester County. The city has a population of 12,326 people as of 2020 and covers an area of 8.3 square miles.

Cambridge was founded in 1684 and was originally known as New Towne. It was renamed Cambridge in 1793 after the city in England. The city has a rich history and is home to many historic sites, including the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, which follows the route that Tubman used to help slaves escape to freedom.

The city has a vibrant downtown area with many shops, restaurants, galleries, and other attractions. There are also several parks located throughout the city, including Great Marsh Park and Sailwinds Park which offer recreational activities such as fishing, boating, biking trails, and more.

The economy of Cambridge is largely based on tourism due to its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and its many attractions. There are also several industries located in Cambridge such as manufacturing, healthcare services, education services, retail trade, construction services, finance & insurance services, professional & technical services and more.

Cambridge is served by two public school systems: Dorchester County Public Schools and Cambridge-South Dorchester High School District. The city also has several private schools such as St. Peter's Episcopal School and Cambridge Christian Academy.
