Chalmette, Louisiana Description

Chalmette is a census-designated place (CDP) located in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 32,069 at the 2010 census.

Chalmette is located just east of the Mississippi River and south of Lake Borgne and is part of the Greater New Orleans metropolitan area. It is a suburb of New Orleans and is located approximately 8 miles from downtown.

The area was originally settled by French colonists in 1763 and was named after Louis-Xavier Martin de Lino de Chalmette, who served as an engineer for the colony. The town was destroyed during the War of 1812 but was rebuilt shortly afterwards. During the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, General Andrew Jackson's troops used Chalmette as their base camp and defeated British forces in what would become one of the most famous battles in American history.

Today, Chalmette is home to many historic sites including Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, which includes a visitor center with exhibits about local history and culture; Chalmette Battlefield; and Fort St. Philip, which dates back to 1779. The town also features several parks including Bayou Segnette State Park, which offers camping, fishing, swimming, boating, and other recreational activities; Old Arabi Historic District; and Old Arabi Park with its playgrounds and picnic areas.

Chalmette has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 64°F (18°C). Average annual precipitation is 62 inches (157 cm).
