Baton Rouge, Louisiana Description

Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana and the second largest city in the state. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, about 80 miles northwest of New Orleans. The city has a population of over 230,000 people and is known for its vibrant culture, diverse economy, and rich history.

The city was founded in 1699 by French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and named after a red pole that marked the boundary between two Native American tribes. Today, Baton Rouge is home to several universities, including Louisiana State University (LSU), Southern University, and Our Lady of the Lake College.

Baton Rouge has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The average temperature in July is around 90°F (32°C) while January temperatures average around 50°F (10°C). The city receives an average of 56 inches (142 cm) of rain per year.

The city's economy is largely based on government services, healthcare, education, petrochemical production, and tourism. Major employers include ExxonMobil Corporation, Dow Chemical Company, Entergy Corporation, and IBM Corporation. Baton Rouge also has a thriving arts scene with numerous galleries and museums such as the Louisiana Art & Science Museum and the LSU Museum of Art.

Baton Rouge offers plenty of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy such as fishing on the Mississippi River or exploring one of its many parks like City Park or BREC's Farr Park Equestrian Center. There are also several festivals throughout the year such as Mardi Gras celebrations in February or Red Stick International Animation Festival in October. No matter what time you visit Baton Rouge you're sure to find something fun to do!
