Richmond, Kentucky is a small city located in the heart of Madison County. It is the county seat and the largest city in the county. The population of Richmond is 33,533 as of 2020.
Richmond is home to Eastern Kentucky University, which was founded in 1906 and has an enrollment of over 16,000 students. The university offers a variety of degree programs and is known for its strong academic programs in business, education, and health sciences.
The city has a rich history that dates back to 1798 when it was founded by Colonel John Miller. Richmond was an important stop on the Wilderness Road during the early 19th century and served as a major trading center for settlers moving westward. During the Civil War, Richmond was occupied by Confederate forces and later served as a Union supply depot.
Today, Richmond is a vibrant community with many attractions for visitors to enjoy. The downtown area features historic buildings such as Old Fort Boonesborough State Park and White Hall State Historic Site. There are also several museums including the Madison County Historical Museum and the EKU Aviation Museum. Other popular attractions include Lake Reba Recreational Complex, which offers fishing, boating, swimming, camping, and other outdoor activities; Hummel Planetarium; and Fort Boonesborough State Park which features living history demonstrations throughout the year.
Richmond also boasts a variety of shopping opportunities from antique stores to modern malls like Richmond Centre Mall. There are also plenty of restaurants offering everything from traditional Southern cuisine to international flavors. With its convenient location near Lexington and Louisville, Richmond makes an ideal destination for day trips or weekend getaways!
