Georgetown, Kentucky Description
Georgetown, Kentucky is a small city located in Scott County, about 12 miles north of Lexington. It is the county seat and has a population of around 32,000 people. The city was founded in 1790 and named after George Washington.
Georgetown is home to Georgetown College, a private liberal arts college affiliated with the Baptist Church. The college was founded in 1829 and is one of the oldest colleges in the United States. The city also has several other educational institutions including Midway University, Kentucky Christian University, and St. Catharine College.
The downtown area of Georgetown features many historic buildings from the 19th century as well as modern shops and restaurants. There are also several parks located throughout the city including Ward Hall Park which features a large lake and walking trails.
Georgetown is known for its annual festivals such as the Festival of the Horse which celebrates Kentucky's horse racing heritage, and the Scott County Fair which features carnival rides, live music, food vendors, and more. The city also hosts several events throughout the year such as concerts at Georgetown College's John L. Hill Chapel or outdoor movies at Ward Hall Park.
