Crawfordsville, Indiana Description
Crawfordsville, Indiana is a small city located in Montgomery County, about an hour northwest of Indianapolis. It is the county seat and has a population of around 15,000 people. The city was founded in 1823 and named after William H. Crawford, who was the Secretary of War under President James Madison.
The city is home to Wabash College, a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1832 and is one of the oldest colleges in the United States. The college has a strong presence in the community and provides many cultural and educational opportunities for residents.
Crawfordsville is also home to several historic sites including General Lew Wallace Study & Museum, which houses artifacts from Wallace's life as well as his famous novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. The Crawfordsville Historic District includes over 200 buildings from the 19th century that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The downtown area features many unique shops and restaurants as well as a variety of festivals throughout the year such as Crawfordsville's annual Fourth of July celebration and Christmas parade. There are also several parks located throughout the city including Shades State Park which offers camping, hiking trails, fishing, canoeing, and more.
