Columbus, Indiana Description
Columbus, Indiana is a small city located in the southeastern part of the state. It is situated along the banks of the East Fork White River and is home to a population of approximately 46,000 people. The city was founded in 1821 and has since grown to become an important industrial center in the region.
The city is known for its unique architecture, which includes works by renowned architects such as Eero Saarinen, I.M. Pei, and Harry Weese. Columbus is also home to several museums and galleries, including the Miller House and Garden, which features a mid-century modern home designed by Saarinen. Other attractions include the Bartholomew County Historical Society Museum, which houses artifacts from local history; the Kidscommons Children’s Museum; and the Columbus Area Arts Council, which offers classes and workshops for all ages.
The city also boasts a vibrant downtown area with numerous restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues. The downtown area hosts several festivals throughout the year including Taste of Columbus in June and Christmas on Fifth Street in December. There are also several parks located throughout Columbus including Mill Race Park along the riverfront and Donner Park with its large playgrounds and picnic areas.
Columbus is served by two major highways: Interstate 65 runs north-south through town while US 31 runs east-west through town connecting it to Indianapolis to the north and Louisville to the south. The city also has its own airport (CMH) located just outside of town that offers daily flights to major cities around the country.
