Waukegan is a city located in Lake County, Illinois, United States. It is the county seat of Lake County and is located just 35 miles north of Chicago. Waukegan has a population of around 88,000 people and is the ninth-largest city in Illinois.
The city was first settled in 1835 by pioneers from New England and was originally known as Little Fort. It was later renamed Waukegan after the Potawatomi word for "little fort". The city grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its proximity to Chicago and its access to Lake Michigan.
