Joliet, Illinois Description
Joliet is a city located in Will County, Illinois, United States. It is the county seat of Will County and is located along the Des Plaines River. The population of Joliet was 147,433 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth-largest city in Illinois and the fourth-largest city in the Chicago metropolitan area.
Joliet is a major industrial city and has been home to many large companies over the years. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including Caterpillar Inc., which produces heavy machinery for construction and mining; Exelon Nuclear, which operates two nuclear power plants; and BNSF Railway, one of the largest freight railroads in North America.
The downtown area of Joliet features a variety of shops and restaurants as well as historic buildings such as the Rialto Square Theatre and Joliet Union Station. The city also has several parks, including Pilcher Park, which features a lake with fishing piers and walking trails; Rock Run Preserve, which offers hiking trails; and Lake Chaminwood Park, which includes a beach area for swimming.
Joliet is also home to several colleges and universities including University of St. Francis, Lewis University, Joliet Junior College, and Governors State University. In addition to these educational institutions there are also several museums in town such as the Joliet Area Historical Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center Museum.
Joliet has something for everyone from its historic downtown area to its outdoor activities like fishing or hiking at one of its many parks or taking a stroll along the Des Plaines Riverwalk Trail. With its convenient location near Chicago it makes for an ideal place to live or visit!
