Harvey, IL is a small city located in Cook County, Illinois. It is situated about 25 miles south of Chicago and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population of Harvey was 25,282 as of the 2010 census.
Harvey was founded in 1891 by Turlington W. Harvey, a real estate developer from Ohio. He named the city after himself and it quickly grew into a bustling industrial center due to its proximity to Chicago and access to railroads and waterways. The city was incorporated in 1893 and has since become a major hub for manufacturing and transportation.
The city is home to several large employers such as Ford Motor Company, US Steel, and Caterpillar Inc., as well as numerous smaller businesses. There are also several educational institutions located in Harvey including South Suburban College, Prairie State College, and Thornton Community College.
The city has a diverse population with African Americans making up the majority of residents at over 70%. Other ethnic groups represented include Hispanics (14%), Whites (10%), Asians (3%), and Native Americans (1%). The median household income in Harvey is $33,890 which is lower than the national average but higher than other cities in Cook County.
