Granite City, Illinois Description
Granite City, Illinois is a city located in Madison County, just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. It is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area and has a population of around 30,000 people.
Granite City was founded in 1896 by German immigrants who named it after the granite quarries that were located nearby. The city quickly grew and became an important industrial center for steel production and other industries. Today, Granite City is still home to several large steel mills and other manufacturing plants.
The city has a rich history and culture that can be seen in its many historic buildings, monuments, and parks. The downtown area features several historic buildings such as the Granite City Public Library, which was built in 1895; the Old Post Office Building; and the Granite City Opera House, which was built in 1901. There are also several parks throughout the city including Wilson Park, which features a lake with paddleboats; Memorial Park; and Washington Park, which has a playground and picnic areas.
Granite City is also home to several educational institutions including Lewis & Clark Community College and Southwestern Illinois College. The city also has a vibrant arts scene with several galleries, theaters, music venues, and festivals throughout the year such as the annual Granite City Art Festival held each summer.
