Milledgeville, Georgia Description
Milledgeville, Georgia is a small city located in the central part of the state. It is the county seat of Baldwin County and is home to approximately 18,000 people. The city was founded in 1803 and named after John Milledge, a former governor of Georgia.
Milledgeville is known for its historic downtown area, which features many buildings from the 19th century. The Old Governor's Mansion, built in 1839, is one of the most popular attractions in town. Other notable sites include the Old State Capitol Building, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, and Memory Hill Cemetery.
The city has a vibrant arts scene with several galleries and performance venues. The local theater company produces plays throughout the year at the historic Grand Theatre. There are also several festivals held throughout the year including Milledgeville's annual Cherry Blossom Festival in March and Octoberfest in October.
The city has several parks and recreational areas including Lake Sinclair, which offers fishing, boating, swimming, camping and other outdoor activities. There are also several golf courses located nearby as well as hiking trails at Oconee National Forest and Hard Labor Creek State Park.
Milledgeville is home to two colleges: Georgia College & State University and Central Georgia Technical College. The city also has a variety of restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining as well as shopping centers with national retailers like Walmart and Target.
