Locust Grove, Georgia Description
Locust Grove is a small city located in Henry County, Georgia, United States. It is situated about 30 miles south of Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The population was 5,402 at the 2010 census, up from 2,322 in 2000.
The city was founded in 1821 by James Berrien and named after a grove of locust trees near his home. It was incorporated as a town in 1874 and as a city in 1908.
Locust Grove is home to many historical sites including the Locust Grove Historic District which includes the original Berrien House, built in 1821; the Locust Grove Academy, built in 1825; and the Locust Grove Cemetery, established in 1827. The city also has several parks including Lake Dow Park which offers fishing, boating, camping and other recreational activities.
The economy of Locust Grove is largely based on agriculture with poultry farming being one of its main industries. Other industries include manufacturing and retail businesses. The city also has several restaurants and shops that cater to both locals and visitors alike.
Locust Grove is served by two school districts: Henry County Schools and Locust Grove Elementary School District. There are also several private schools located within the city limits including Eagle's Landing Christian Academy and Strong Rock Christian School.
