Jonesboro, Georgia is a city located in Clayton County, just south of Atlanta. It is the county seat and has a population of 4,724 people as of 2019. The city is known for its historic downtown area, which features many buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Jonesboro is also home to Clayton State University and the National Archives at Atlanta.
The city was founded in 1823 by European settlers who named it after Samuel Goode Jones, an early settler and state senator. The town quickly grew into a bustling center for trade and commerce due to its location on the railroad line between Macon and Atlanta. In 1891, Jonesboro was incorporated as a city.
Today, Jonesboro is a vibrant community with many attractions for visitors and residents alike. The downtown area features several historic buildings such as the Old Courthouse Museum, which houses artifacts from the Civil War era. There are also several parks in the area including Lee Street Park, which offers walking trails and picnic areas. Other attractions include the Clayton County International Park, which features an Olympic-sized swimming pool and other recreational activities; the Clayton County Historical Society Museum; and the Clayton County Arts Center.
Jonesboro is also home to several restaurants offering a variety of cuisines from around the world including Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Mediterranean and more. Shopping options include antique stores as well as modern retail outlets such as Walmart Supercenter and Target. There are also several churches in town representing various denominations including Baptist, Methodist Episcopal Church South (MECS), Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA), United Methodist Church (UMC) and more.
