Griffin, Georgia Description
Griffin, Georgia is a city located in Spalding County, about 40 miles south of Atlanta. It is the county seat and has a population of 23,643 as of the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1840 and named after landowner Col. Lewis Lawrence Griffin.
The city is known for its historic downtown area, which features many 19th century buildings and homes. There are also several parks and recreational areas in the city, including the Griffin-Spalding County Historical Museum, which houses artifacts from the area's past.
The economy of Griffin is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large companies such as Fieldale Farms Corporation, which produces poultry products; Georgia-Pacific Corporation, which manufactures paper products; and Tanger Outlet Center, a shopping center with over 100 stores.
Griffin is served by two major highways: US Highway 19/41 and Interstate 75. The closest airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, located about 45 miles away in Atlanta. The city also has its own public school system with seven elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools and one alternative school.
Griffin has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Average temperatures range from lows of around 40 degrees Fahrenheit in winter to highs of around 90 degrees Fahrenheit in summer. Rainfall averages around 50 inches per year with most precipitation occurring during the spring months.
