Eatonton, Georgia Description
Eatonton, Georgia is a small city located in the heart of Putnam County. It is situated on the banks of Lake Oconee and is known for its historic downtown area and its many outdoor activities. The city has a population of 6,480 people as of 2020 and is the county seat of Putnam County.
The city was founded in 1807 by William Eatonton, who named it after his father. It was incorporated in 1809 and has since grown to become a thriving community with a variety of businesses, restaurants, and attractions. The downtown area features several historic buildings, including the Old Putnam County Courthouse and the Eatonton-Putnam Historical Museum. There are also several parks in the area, including Harmony Park and Memorial Park.
Eatonton is home to several annual festivals and events such as the Eatonton Music Festival, which takes place every summer; the Eatonton Film Festival; and the Eatonton Arts & Crafts Festival. The city also hosts an annual Fourth of July celebration that includes fireworks displays over Lake Oconee.
The city is home to several educational institutions such as Georgia College & State University, which offers undergraduate degrees in various fields; Putnam County High School; and Putnam County Middle School. There are also several private schools in the area such as St. Mary's Catholic School and Trinity Christian Academy.
