Dalton, Georgia Description
Dalton, Georgia is a city located in the northwestern part of the state, about 90 miles north of Atlanta. It is the county seat of Whitfield County and is part of the Chattanooga-Cleveland-Dalton metropolitan area. The city has a population of approximately 33,000 people and covers an area of about 16 square miles.
The city was founded in 1847 by settlers from Dalton, Massachusetts and was named after their hometown. It quickly became an important center for manufacturing carpets and rugs due to its proximity to the Appalachian Mountains and its abundant natural resources. Today, Dalton is still known as the “Carpet Capital of the World” and is home to many major carpet manufacturers such as Shaw Industries, Mohawk Industries, Beaulieu Group, and Interface Inc.
Dalton has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The average high temperature in July is 89 degrees Fahrenheit while the average low temperature in January is 33 degrees Fahrenheit. The city receives an average annual rainfall of around 50 inches per year.
The city offers a variety of attractions including several museums such as the Northwest Georgia History Museum, which showcases artifacts from local history; the Creative Arts Guild which features art galleries; and the Dalton Freight Depot Museum which houses railroad memorabilia from days gone by. There are also several parks located throughout Dalton including Heritage Point Park which features walking trails along with picnic areas; Hamilton Park which offers playgrounds and sports fields; and Coolidge Park which has a lake for fishing or boating activities.
Dalton also offers plenty of shopping opportunities with several malls located throughout town such as Walnut Square Mall, Northgate Mall, and Market Street Shopping Center. There are also numerous restaurants offering everything from fast food to fine dining experiences.
