Wimauma, Florida Description
Wimauma, FL is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. It is situated about 25 miles south of Tampa and is part of the Tampa Bay Area. The population of Wimauma was 5,813 as of the 2010 census.
The town was founded in 1902 by Captain J.H. Wimauma, a former Confederate soldier who settled in the area after the Civil War. The town was originally called "Wimauma Station" and served as a stop on the Seaboard Air Line Railway. In 1925, the name was changed to Wimauma and it became an incorporated municipality in 1925.
The town has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The average temperature ranges from 65°F to 90°F throughout the year with an average annual rainfall of around 50 inches per year.
Wimauma is home to several parks including Wimauma Park, which features a playground, picnic areas, basketball courts, and walking trails; and Balm-Boyette Scrub Nature Preserve which offers hiking trails and wildlife viewing opportunities. There are also several golf courses in the area including Summerfield Crossings Golf Club and Diamond Hill Golf Course.
The town also has several restaurants offering a variety of cuisines such as Mexican, Italian, Chinese, American, and more. Shopping options include Walmart Supercenter and Publix Super Market at Summerfield Crossing Shopping Center as well as other local stores throughout the town.
Wimauma is served by Hillsborough County Public Schools with two elementary schools (Buckhorn Elementary School and Wimauma Elementary School) one middle school (Shields Middle School) and one high school (East Bay High School).
