The town was founded in 1883 by William Pierce and named after him. It was originally a farming community and still has a strong agricultural presence today. The main crops grown are cotton, peanuts, corn, soybeans, and hay.

Pierce is home to several churches including First Baptist Church of Pierce and St. John's Catholic Church. There are also two schools in the area: Pierce Elementary School and Holmes County High School.
