Oviedo, Florida Description
Oviedo is a city located in Seminole County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 33,342 at the 2010 census, up from 26,316 at the 2000 census. Oviedo is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and excellent schools.
Oviedo is situated in Central Florida, approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown Orlando and 30 miles southwest of Daytona Beach. It is bordered by Winter Springs to the north, Geneva to the east, Chuluota to the southeast, and Lake Jesup to the south. The city has a total area of 24 square miles and is located on an elevated ridge between two lakes: Lake Jesup to the south and Lake Charm to the north.
The city's economy is largely based on retail and services with some light manufacturing. Major employers include Publix Super Markets Inc., Lockheed Martin Corporation, Siemens Medical Solutions USA Inc., and Oviedo Medical Center. The University of Central Florida (UCF) has a satellite campus in Oviedo that offers undergraduate degrees in business administration and computer science as well as graduate degrees in engineering management and public administration.
Oviedo offers a variety of recreational activities for residents and visitors alike including golf courses, parks, trails for biking or walking, fishing spots, sports complexes, museums, art galleries, theaters and more. The city also hosts several annual events such as the Oviedo Marketplace Farmers Market every Saturday morning from April through October; Taste of Oviedo in May; Music Fest in June; Independence Day Celebration in July; Fall Festival in October; Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in December; and many more throughout the year.
