Merritt Island, Florida Description
Merritt Island is a census-designated place located in Brevard County, Florida, USA. It is situated on the eastern side of the Indian River Lagoon and is bordered by the Banana River to the south and east. The island is home to a variety of wildlife, including manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, and numerous species of birds. It also has several parks and preserves that offer visitors a chance to explore its natural beauty.
The island has a population of approximately 35,000 people and covers an area of approximately 40 square miles. It is home to several communities including Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Canaveral National Seashore, Merritt Island Airport, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, and Port Canaveral.
Merritt Island offers visitors plenty of activities such as fishing, boating, kayaking, bird watching, camping, hiking trails and more. There are also several restaurants offering local seafood dishes as well as other cuisines from around the world. Shopping opportunities include boutiques and souvenir shops as well as larger stores like Walmart Supercenter and Target.
The climate in Merritt Island is subtropical with hot summers and mild winters. Average temperatures range from 70°F in winter to 90°F in summer with occasional rain showers throughout the year.
