Lake Wales, Florida Description
Lake Wales is a small city located in Central Florida, about an hour and a half drive from both Tampa and Orlando. It is situated in the rolling hills of the Lake Wales Ridge, which is part of the larger Central Florida Ridge. The city has a population of around 14,000 people and covers an area of 8.5 square miles.
The city was founded in 1911 by the Lake Wales Land Company and was named after nearby Lake Wales. The lake itself is a large natural lake that covers over 1,000 acres and is home to many species of fish and wildlife.
The downtown area of Lake Wales features many historic buildings, including the historic Bok Tower Gardens, which were built in 1929 by Edward Bok as a tribute to his wife Mary Louise Curtis Bok. The gardens are open to the public and feature beautiful gardens, fountains, sculptures, and more. Other attractions include Spook Hill, which is said to be haunted by ghosts; the Historic Downtown Shopping District; and several museums such as the Polk County Historical Museum.
Lake Wales also offers plenty of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy such as fishing on Lake Wales or one of its many other lakes; hiking or biking on one of its many trails; camping at one of its campgrounds; or visiting one of its many parks such as Saddle Creek Park or Crooked Lake Park. There are also several golf courses located in the area for those looking for a round or two.
Overall, Lake Wales is a great place to visit for those looking for some peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of larger cities like Tampa or Orlando. With its beautiful scenery, historic sites, outdoor activities, and more there’s something for everyone here!
