DeFuniak Springs, Florida Description
DeFuniak Springs, Florida is a small city located in the panhandle of the state. It is situated in Walton County and is part of the Fort Walton Beach-Crestview-Destin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of around 6,000 people and covers an area of 8.2 square miles.
The city was founded in 1888 by Dr. Leonidas W. DeFuniak, who named it after himself. It was originally a resort town and still retains much of its original charm today. The downtown area is full of historic buildings, including the Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood, which was built in 1885 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city has several parks and recreational areas, including Lake DeFuniak, which is a natural spring-fed lake that offers swimming, fishing, boating and other activities. There are also several golf courses in the area as well as hiking trails and camping sites at nearby state parks such as Blackwater River State Park and Eglin Air Force Base Recreation Area.
DeFuniak Springs also has a vibrant arts scene with several galleries and museums showcasing local artwork as well as performances from local musicians throughout the year. The city also hosts several festivals throughout the year such as the annual Chautauqua Festival which celebrates local culture with music, food, artisans and more.
