Hamden, Connecticut Description
Hamden, Connecticut is a town located in New Haven County, Connecticut. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, about 8 miles north of New Haven. The town has a population of approximately 60,000 people and covers an area of 24 square miles.
The town was first settled in 1678 and was incorporated as a town in 1786. Hamden is home to several colleges and universities including Quinnipiac University, Albertus Magnus College, and Southern Connecticut State University.
The town has a variety of attractions for visitors to enjoy including the Sleeping Giant State Park which offers hiking trails and picnic areas; the Eli Whitney Museum which features exhibits on the life and inventions of Eli Whitney; and the Hamden Historical Society which preserves local history. There are also several parks throughout the town such as Brooksvale Park, Lake Wintergreen Park, and Town Center Park.
Hamden is served by two major highways: Interstate 91 and Route 15. The town also has its own public transportation system called CT Transit which provides bus service throughout the area. The closest airport is Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport located just outside of New Haven.
Hamden offers a variety of shopping options from small boutiques to large malls such as Westfield Shoppingtown Meriden or The Shops at Yale. There are also many restaurants ranging from casual eateries to fine dining establishments.
