Denver, Colorado Description
Denver, Colorado is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Colorado. Located in the South Platte River Valley on the western edge of the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, Denver is nicknamed the Mile High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile (5,280 feet or 1,609 meters) above sea level. The 105th meridian west of Greenwich passes directly through Denver Union Station making it the reference point for mountain time zone calculations in the United States.
The city has a total area of 155 square miles (401 km2), making it larger than Boston and San Francisco but smaller than Los Angeles and Chicago. Denver is a major transportation hub with a major international airport, railroads, highways and bus lines that connect to all parts of Colorado and beyond. It also has an extensive network of bike paths and trails throughout its parks and open spaces.
Denver's climate is semi-arid with four distinct seasons: warm summers with low humidity; cold winters with occasional snowfall; springtime with mild temperatures; and fall with cool temperatures. The average annual temperature is 54°F (12°C). The city receives an average annual precipitation of 15 inches (380 mm).
Denver's economy is based on service industries such as finance, insurance, real estate, health care, government services, professional services, hospitality/tourism, retail trade and manufacturing. It also has a thriving arts scene with numerous museums, galleries and performing arts venues. The city also hosts several major sports teams including baseball's Colorado Rockies; basketball's Denver Nuggets; football's Denver Broncos; hockey's Colorado Avalanche; lacrosse's Colorado Mammoth; soccer's Colorado Rapids; rugby union's Glendale Raptors; and Ultimate Frisbee's Denver Outlaws.
