Thermal, California Description
Thermal, California is a small unincorporated community located in the Coachella Valley of Riverside County. It is situated between the cities of Indio and Mecca, and is approximately 25 miles southeast of Palm Springs. The population of Thermal is estimated to be around 2,000 people.
The area was originally inhabited by the Cahuilla Indians, who named it “Tecalote” which means “hot water” in their language. The name was later changed to Thermal when settlers arrived in the late 19th century. The town was founded in 1876 by William D. Bradshaw and his family, who were drawn to the area due to its hot springs and mineral-rich soil.
Today, Thermal is a rural agricultural community that produces dates, citrus fruits, vegetables, and other crops. It also has several wineries and vineyards that produce award-winning wines. The town also has a few restaurants and shops that cater to tourists visiting the area for its natural beauty and outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, bird watching, horseback riding, golfing, tennis, swimming, fishing and more.
Thermal is home to two schools: Desert Mirage High School and John Glenn Middle School. It also has a post office and library as well as several churches representing various denominations. There are also several parks in the area including Oasis Park which features a lake with paddle boats for rent as well as picnic areas with barbecues for visitors to enjoy.
