Landers, California Description
Landers, California is an unincorporated community located in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County. It is situated at an elevation of 2,812 feet (857 m) and is approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of Yucca Valley. The population was estimated to be 2,500 in 2020.
The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans and was later settled by ranchers in the late 19th century. In the 1950s, Landers became a popular destination for off-road enthusiasts due to its proximity to the nearby Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area.
Today, Landers is a small rural community with a few businesses and services including a post office, gas station, convenience store, restaurant, and several RV parks. The town also has a volunteer fire department and is home to the Landers Community Church.
The area is known for its unique geology which includes Joshua Tree National Park and Giant Rock, which is believed to be the largest free-standing boulder in the world. The area also features numerous hiking trails and camping sites as well as several natural hot springs.
Landers has become increasingly popular with tourists over recent years due to its close proximity to Los Angeles and Las Vegas as well as its unique desert landscape. It has also become a popular destination for stargazing due to its dark night skies which are free from light pollution.
