Lakeport, California Description
Lakeport is a small city located in Lake County, California, United States. It is situated on the shores of Clear Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake entirely within California. The city has a population of approximately 5,000 people and is the county seat of Lake County.
The city was founded in 1867 and was originally known as Forbestown. It was later renamed to Lakeport after the lake it sits on. The city is surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, camping, hiking and biking.
The downtown area of Lakeport features several historic buildings including the courthouse which dates back to 1871 and the Carnegie Library which was built in 1904. There are also several restaurants and shops located in downtown as well as a movie theater and bowling alley.
The city also hosts several annual events such as the Clear Lake Jazz Festival, Clear Lake Art & Wine Festival, Clear Lake Car Show & Swap Meet and the Clear Lake Music Festival. There are also several parks located throughout the city including Library Park which features a playground and picnic area as well as a skate park.
Lakeport is home to two colleges: Mendocino College which offers associate degrees in various fields of study; and University of California Extension Center which offers classes for students who wish to pursue higher education without leaving their hometowns.
