Juniper Hills, California Description
Juniper Hills is a small unincorporated community located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, California. It is situated at an elevation of 2,845 feet (867 m) and is located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The community is surrounded by the Angeles National Forest and has a population of approximately 1,000 people.
The area was originally inhabited by the Tataviam Native Americans before being settled by Spanish missionaries in the late 1700s. The area was later developed as a ranching community in the early 1900s and was home to several movie ranches during Hollywood's Golden Age. Today, Juniper Hills is a popular destination for outdoor recreation such as hiking, camping, horseback riding, mountain biking, and rock climbing.
The climate in Juniper Hills is semi-arid with hot summers and cool winters. Average temperatures range from highs of 90°F (32°C) in the summer to lows of 30°F (-1°C) in the winter. Rainfall averages around 10 inches (25 cm) per year with most precipitation occurring between November and March.
The landscape of Juniper Hills consists mostly of rolling hills covered with chaparral vegetation including sagebrush, manzanita bushes, juniper trees, and various wildflowers. Wildlife includes coyotes, bobcats, mule deer, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, hawks, eagles and other birds of prey.
Juniper Hills offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys as well as access to numerous trails for hiking or horseback riding through the Angeles National Forest. There are also several campgrounds nearby for those who wish to stay overnight or longer.
