Indio, California Description
Indio, California is a city located in Riverside County, in the Coachella Valley of Southern California. It is situated between Palm Springs and Coachella, and is the largest city in the region. The population of Indio was 88,824 as of 2019.
Indio has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century when it was founded by railroad workers who were constructing a rail line from Los Angeles to Yuma, Arizona. The city was named after a nearby creek called “El Indio” which means “the Indian” in Spanish.
The city is known for its hot desert climate and its proximity to many popular attractions such as Joshua Tree National Park, Salton Sea State Recreation Area, and the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. It also hosts several annual events such as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach Country Music Festival.
