Escondido is a city located in San Diego County, California, United States. It is situated about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of downtown San Diego and is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad metropolitan area. The city has a population of 151,000 and covers an area of 37 square miles (96 km2).
Escondido is known for its rich history and culture. The city was founded in 1888 by John Frazier, who named it after the Spanish word for “hidden” due to its location in a valley surrounded by hills. Escondido has grown to become one of the largest cities in San Diego County and is home to many attractions such as the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, which features art galleries, theaters, and educational programs; the San Diego Zoo Safari Park; and Lake Wohlford, which offers fishing and boating activities.
The climate in Escondido is Mediterranean with hot summers and mild winters. Average temperatures range from 50°F (10°C) in January to 85°F (29°C) in July. The city receives an average of 10 inches (25 cm) of rain per year.
Escondido has a vibrant economy with many businesses ranging from small family-owned shops to large corporations such as Stone Brewing Co., which produces craft beer. The city also has a thriving agricultural industry with many farms producing avocados, citrus fruits, olives, tomatoes, peppers, and other crops.
Escondido is home to several parks including Kit Carson Park which features a lake with fishing opportunities; Daley Ranch which offers hiking trails; Dixon Lake which offers camping sites; and Grape Day Park which hosts festivals throughout the year. There are also several golf courses located within the city limits including Reidy Creek Golf Course and Castle Creek Country Club.
