Compton, California is a city located in the southern part of Los Angeles County. It is situated south of downtown Los Angeles and is bordered by the cities of Lynwood, Paramount, and Long Beach. Compton has a population of over 97,000 people and covers an area of approximately 10 square miles.

The city was founded in 1888 by Griffith D. Compton and was originally named “Gibsonton” after his father-in-law, Dr. Josiah Gibson. The name was later changed to Compton in 1889 when the post office opened.

Compton is known for its diverse culture and vibrant music scene. It has been home to many influential musicians such as Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Kendrick Lamar, and Snoop Dogg who have all contributed to the city’s hip hop culture. The city also has a rich history in jazz music with many famous jazz musicians having lived or performed in Compton including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane.

Compton is also home to several parks including Centennial Park which features a lake with paddle boats and fishing opportunities as well as picnic areas and playgrounds for children. The city also has several museums such as the Watts Tower Arts Center which showcases African American art from around the world as well as local artists from Compton itself.

Compton is served by two major freeways: Interstate 710 (Long Beach Freeway) and Interstate 105 (Glenn Anderson Freeway). The city also has its own public transportation system called “The Wave” which provides bus service throughout the city as well as connecting it to other parts of Los Angeles County.
