Surprise, Arizona Description
Surprise, AZ is a city located in Maricopa County, Arizona. It is about 45 minutes northwest of Phoenix and is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1938 by Flora Mae Statler, who named it after her surprise birthday party.
Surprise has a population of approximately 130,000 people and is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. The city has a diverse economy with many businesses ranging from retail to manufacturing. The city also has a strong tourism industry with many attractions such as the Surprise Stadium, which hosts spring training for Major League Baseball teams, and the Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium.
The climate in Surprise is hot and dry during the summer months with temperatures reaching up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius). Winters are mild with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing.
Surprise has many parks and recreational areas including White Tank Mountain Regional Park, which offers hiking trails and camping sites. There are also several golf courses in the area including Granite Falls Golf Course and Coyote Lakes Golf Club.
Surprise is home to several educational institutions including Arizona State University West Campus, Ottawa University-Arizona Campus, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Prescott Campus. The city also has several public schools as well as private schools such as Valley Christian High School and Valley Christian Elementary School.
