Northport, Alabama Description
Northport, AL is a small city located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. It is situated on the Black Warrior River and is part of the Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. Northport has a population of 23,330 people as of 2020 and is known for its historic downtown area.
The city was founded in 1821 and was originally called North Port. It was later changed to Northport in 1871. The city has a rich history that includes being the site of the Battle of Tuscaloosa during the Civil War.
Northport is home to several attractions including Kentuck Park, which features an art gallery, museum, and outdoor amphitheater; the University of Alabama Arboretum; and the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk. The city also hosts several annual events such as the Kentuck Festival of Arts and Crafts and the Northport Heritage Festival.
The downtown area features many historic buildings such as City Hall, which was built in 1891; First United Methodist Church, which dates back to 1837; and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, which was built in 1845. There are also several restaurants, shops, galleries, and other businesses located in downtown Northport.
Northport is served by two school districts: Tuscaloosa County Schools and Northport City Schools. The city also has two public libraries: Northport Public Library and Tuscaloosa Public Library System.
Northport offers a variety of recreational activities including golf courses, parks, trails for biking or walking, fishing spots along the riverbank, boat ramps for access to Lake Tuscaloosa, tennis courts at Kentuck Park, disc golf courses at Kentuck Park and University Mall Shopping Center, swimming pools at Kentuck Park and University Mall Shopping Center, playgrounds at Kentuck Park and University Mall Shopping Center ,and more!
