Helena, Alabama Description
Helena, AL is a small city located in the heart of Shelby County, Alabama. It is situated just 20 miles south of Birmingham and is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Helena has a population of approximately 18,000 people and covers an area of 8.7 square miles.
The city was founded in 1845 by settlers from Georgia and Tennessee who were looking for a place to settle down and start their own businesses. The town was named after the daughter of one of the original settlers, Helena Smith. Since then, Helena has grown into a thriving community with a variety of businesses, restaurants, and attractions.
The downtown area is home to many historic buildings that have been preserved over the years. These include the Old Town Hall, which was built in 1887 and now serves as a museum; the Helena Depot Museum; and the historic St. Paul's Episcopal Church. There are also several parks located throughout the city including Veterans Park, which features a memorial honoring those who served in World War II; and Old Town Park, which offers walking trails and picnic areas for visitors to enjoy.
Helena is also home to several educational institutions including Bevill State Community College, which offers associate degrees in various fields; University of Montevallo at Helena; and Jefferson State Community College at Helena. In addition to these schools, there are also several private schools located within the city limits such as St. Paul's Episcopal School and Holy Family Catholic School.
Helena is known for its vibrant arts scene with numerous galleries showcasing local artists' work as well as live music venues hosting local bands on weekends throughout the year. The city also hosts several annual festivals such as the Annual Christmas Parade in December; Springfest in April; Summerfest in June; Fallfest in October; and Winterfest in December.
